Glacier National Park Area

One of the main draws to the Whitefish, MT area is Glacier National Park. This awe-inspiring national park is just a short drive from the city of Whitefish and offers a handful of dog-friendly opportunities. When we visited, the Going To The Sun road wasn’t open yet, but we still had a great time checking out the Lake McDonald area. Check out our post on kayaking in Glacier National Park with your dogs for more information.

If you’re traveling to Glacier from the Whitefish, MT area, we found a couple nice dog-friendly options right outside of the park:

  • Freda’s Bar is located right outside of the park in West Glacier. It offers a spacious dog-friendly patio with great food and drink options that you can order inside. This is a great spot to refuel after exploring the park. There are also some nearby gift shops if you’re looking for the perfect souvenir.
  • Just down the road from the park you’ll find the Glacier Distilling Company. They have a spacious covered patio and were excited to welcome our dogs with water bowls and treats. The distillery makes a wide variety of locally distilled spirits which we enjoyed sampling. We’d highly recommend a stop here with your pup!

Whitefish

There are a variety of cafes, breweries, and bars that have dog-friendly patios in Whitefish. Note that dogs are not allowed indoors, so patios will be seasonal and you’ll need to plan accordingly with inclement weather.

Our favorite stop in Whitefish was at Bonsai Brewing Project. They had a huge outdoor space with tables spread out around gardens, trees, and green spaces. Our dogs loved relaxing at the brewery taking in the mountain views. The brewery also offers some of the best beers in town and has their own kitchen to order tasty meals from.

Kalispell

Just down the road from Whitefish you’ll find Kalispell, MT. Though Whitefish gets more name recognition with it’s mountain town and skiing appeal, Kalispell is a slightly larger city that offers a variety of great dog-friendly options. These were our favorite stops:

  • Bias Brewing has a large outdoor space where they have turned a parking lot into a dog-friendly patio. This looked to be something that they did during the pandemic and decided to keep, but it may be good to double check it’s still available when you visit. When enjoyed a wide selection of beer and food offerings at the brewery.
  • SunRift Beer Company was just down the street from Bias Brewing and was very welcoming of our dogs. They offer two different dog-friendly patio areas including the covered deck that we chose to sit at. Along with great beer they also offer a full dining menu and services. We enjoyed eating dinner here along with meeting the other dogs on the patio.
  • If you’re looking to try some locally distilled spirits, stop by Whitefish Handcrafted Spirits. They have a large backyard space that is dog-friendly. Though we were there early in the season before this area was fully open, we appreciated that they accommodated us and allowed us to enjoy some tasty cocktails with our pups. They do also offer a small rotating menu of snacks and meal choices.
