Hiking Iceland’s Skogafoss Trail: Hidden Waterfall Wonderland

Iceland is a land of extraordinary beauty, where rugged landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and awe-inspiring trails await intrepid adventurers. Among its many natural treasures, the Skogafoss waterfall and its accompanying trail stand out as one of the country’s most enchanting destinations. If you’re seeking an unforgettable hiking experience with stunning views, the Skogafoss trail should be at the top of your list. Join us as we embark on an adventure to see the 25 waterfalls hidden above Skogafoss.

The Skogafoss Trail

Note: You may see this trail referenced as Waterfall Way or shortened as the Skógá Trail. This trail is also part of the Fimmvörðuháls trail where you can continue on for approximately 15.5 miles from Skogafoss to the town of Thorsmork. This makes it an ideal day hike or multi-day adventure for those seeking a deeper immersion into Iceland’s natural wonders. Beyond the waterfalls the trail winds its way through diverse landscapes including volcanic plains, canyons, and glacial rivers.

Hiking To The 25 Hidden Waterfalls

  • To get to the start of the trail, climb the metal stairs to the right of the Skogafoss waterfall. These stairs are a bit of a challenge but provide nice views along the way. This is also your biggest incline of the hike as the trail is relatively flat once you get going.
  • To see all of the 25 hidden waterfalls it is approximately a 10 mile round-trip hike from Skogafoss. You will begin seeing waterfalls right away and we’d highly recommend doing this hike even if you only plan to do a couple miles. The photos and videos certainly don’t do this trail justice as each turn brings another beautiful waterfall into view.
  • The hike is well marked and easy to follow. You will go through some rugged terrain, especially if you plan to venture out to some of the natural overlooks. We’d recommend sturdy hiking boots. The exposed landscape can also be very windy at times and you’ll want some sort of windbreaker jacket along.
  • Make sure to bring water and snacks as you take in the views and fuel yourself along the way.

From the thundering majesty of Skogafoss waterfall to the diverse landscapes that unfold along the trail, this journey offers an unforgettable experience for hikers and nature enthusiasts alike. Lace up your boots and let the wonders of the Skogafoss trail reveal themselves as you venture deeper into the heart of Iceland’s natural realm. We hope this helps you get the most out of your time in Iceland! For more travel inspiration, check out our additional blog posts on international travel.
