On The Road Again – RV Driving Report
The last two days of RV driving have been back-to-back after work driving days as we made our way from Deadwood, SD to Grand Junction, CO. To break the trip up, we did an overnight stop in Rawlins, WY. The combined driving time was around 12 hours with just some quick stops for gas. Something that we realized on this drive to keep in mind with timing is whether or not you’ll be driving the posted speed limits. We don’t like going over 65mph with our RV pulling the SUV, and many roads in this area are 75 or 80 mph speed limits which things like Google Maps assume you’ll be going. Given that, for us the actual drive time was a decent amount longer than Google’s estimates.
It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.
The diverse scenery and landscape that this route took us through was amazing! From the forested Black Hills, to the never ending ranches and picturesque rock formations in Wyoming, past snowy mountains in central Colorado, and finally ending in the high desert region of Grand Junction, the views were constantly changing. The majority of this route was also on 2 lane highways which carved through these landscapes and provided for both exciting and at times challenging driving (especially with some high winds).
The most challenging part of this RV driving journey was in Colorado (Highway 13 south of Baggs) where we ran into a 5 mile stretch of heavy construction. It was down to a small single lane dirt path (not going to call it a road) that we slowly made our way through hoping on every bump that the RV would get past the ruts in the ground and that our SUV would stay on the trailer. It was rough going, but luckily we made it through in one piece!
We hope this helps you plan your next trip! Check out more of our outdoor adventures here.
