RV Remote Work Check In

RV Remote Work Check In

We have now completed two full weeks of remote work during our RV adventure and it’s time to check in how how the work side of things is going:

  • Overall, we’ve been able to work effectively with minimal distractions compared to our typical at-home work environment. The main challenges have come from working close together in the same spot that we’re also trying to live in and do other daily tasks like making our morning lattes (which can be noisy!). When both needing to talk in meetings at the same time, we can move pretty easily to the back bedroom or outside the RV.
  • While in Grand Junction, the weather was perfect to be able to move our offices outside – hoping to have more of this along the way. Our portable desk raises to be a standing desk and was nice to have outside, and we also took opportunities to bring our laptops out for a break from the RV.
  • We have been 1 hour ahead of our offices in Des Moines while in Grand Junction and Cannonville, and 2 hours ahead while in Flagstaff (because AZ doesn’t follow daylight savings time). This makes for early meetings at times (had multiple 6am meetings this past week), but it also let’s us wrap up the day a bit early to get out and explore.
  • One unforeseen result of this trip is that we get asked a lot in work meetings to talk about where we’re at, how our latest hike was, etc. It’s funny hearing us both share the same stories multiple times throughout the day.
  • The work weeks have flown by – it helps having hikes, brewery visits, scenic drives, etc. to look forward to each day!

The KOA internet speeds have been hit and miss over the last 2 weeks. Grand Junction has by far had the best WiFi available and we only used that while staying there. Since then, we’ve been happy to have our Verizon hotspot available for use. Not only is it useful for places like our Flagstaff KOA that has reliable but very slow WiFi, but it also helps us stay connected while on the road which happens at times when we need to check out early but still work during the day.

We hope this helps you plan your next trip! Check out more of our outdoor adventures here.
