Grand Canyon National Park With Dogs

Grand Canyon National Park With Dogs

There are a few dog friendly spots within the Grand Canyon National Park with dogs and we definitely found the money spot! We spent our day at the South Rim but there is 1 trail we’ve heard of on the North Rim that dogs are allowed (the Bridal Trail-Greenway) if you are up there.

We entered through the less popular East entrance and stopped at the Desert View Campground area. Here you can find several lookout point as well as bathrooms, a gift shop and small cafe.  Leashed dogs are permitted on established roads and the paved area here.

Grand Canyon’s Shoshone Point Trail

The real star of the show is down the road at the Shoshone Point Trail. This is a 2 mile out and back trail that leads to the most amazing picturesque overlook. There isn’t a sign so you’ll have to find it on your map or you’ll miss it.

The mile hike in is a wide dirt road that has a lot of shade. At the end there is a picnic shelter and bathroom with a large clearing but you must keep going out to the peninsula. The views out here you will not find on any of the other popular paved dog friendly overlooks. There are spots that near the cliff edge so be very careful especially with your pup.

  • Corgis pose with their owner at the cliff edge overlooking the Grand Canyon
  • Corgis relax at a picturesque overlook of the Grand Canyon
  • Corgi splooting at a picturesque overlook of the Grand Canyon
  • Corgis takes a nap at a picturesque overlook of the Grand Canyon

Apparently even in the busy seasons this spot remains pretty quiet. In late May we had maybe 10 other people around the peninsula with us over the hour we relaxed there.

For the best Grand Canyon views with minimal people, hike the Shoshone Trail.

We honestly didn’t need to stop anywhere else after taking in this view but we did head to a few more lookouts just because you don’t get to see the Grand Canyon every day!

Visitor’s Center & Mather Campground

Our final stop was at the Visitor’s Center & Mather Campground area which was pretty crowded around 2pm on a Saturday. This is another dog friendly spot with one main overlook plus plenty of areas to take in the views along the paved paths. This area also has a cafe and bathrooms so we grabbed a quick coffee for our drive home.
